On January 9, 2010, from 1-6pm, The Ballethnic Dance Company will host The Master Dance Series founded by Dawn Branch, Professional Dancer and Master Instructor. This series touts some of the best and brightest dancers, students, teachers and masters in dance today.

Atlanta, GA – November 9, 2009 (PressReleasePivot) — On January 9, 2010, from 1-6pm, The Ballethnic Dance Company will host The Master Dance Series founded by Dawn Branch, Professional Dancer and Master Instructor. This series touts some of the best and brightest dancers, students, teachers and masters in dance today.

A diverse body of dancers will assemble for a rigorous and explosive 5-hour series of master classes (1.5 hours each) in Ballet, Modern and Hip Hop (Urban Contemporary Dance). This particular series of master classes is much anticipated as it has managed to engage the talents and teachings of a cast of 3 exceptional masters across all 3 disciplines. Waverley T. Lucas, Lloyd E. Whitmore, & Monica Richardson will provide paramount direction, guidance and spirited class instruction for dancers ranging from 9 years through adulthood.

Master Dance Teachers:

WAVERLY T. LUCAS – Master Ballet Teacher & Director, Ballethnic Dance Company

Waverly is a former member of Dance Theatre of Harlem, the Atlanta Ballet, and “Heartstrings.” While attending Mary Grove College in Detroit, he began to choreograph and conceived the concept and name of Ballethnic Dance Company. Mr. Lucas was the recipient of the Princess Grace Scholarship. In Ballethnic’s short history; he has created more than 20 original ballets including two full length works, Urban Nutcracker, and The Leopard’s Tale. His choreography has been performed in the 1996 Olympic Arts Festival, the National Black Arts Festivals, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday Celebration, 93, KINGFEST, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Outreach Program. As a part of the 1996 Olympic Arts Festival effort, not only did he choreograph and perform Alonzo, he also had the opportunity to have Irene Tassembedo’s Rain Dance set on him. He was chosen for the National Choreographers Award at the Southeastern Regional Ballet Festival. Mr. Lucas is the creator of the Danseur Development Project that is a training program for young males in dance and is the co-artistic Director for Ballethnic Youth Ensemble. Waverly most recently set Urban Nutcracker, Act II on the University of Georgia and the East Athens Dance Center. Mr. Lucas has also danced with “Harry the Hawk” of the Atlanta Hawks at the Omni, performed and taught intermediate and advanced ballet at the International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference, and appeared as Junebug in the HBO film “Miss Evers Boys.” Mr. Lucas was Artist in Residence at the University of Georgia in 1997 and is a member of (BIND) Black Independent Network of Dancers.

LLOYD E. WHITMORE – Choreographer / Modern Dance Instructor

Lloyd Whitmore, a native of Philadelphia PA., began his dance career at age 20. Since then he has spent 30 years in dance as a teacher and choreographer. Trained in the Lester Horton and Martha Graham techniques, Mr. Whitmore has performed all over the world with companies such as Philadanco, The New Orleans Opera, and the DC Contemporary Dance Theater. From 1991 – 1993, Mr. Whitmore served as Artistic Director of his own modern dance company, the New World Dance Company of Washington, DC. Mr. Whitmore was the first male recipient of a scholarship to the Craft of Choreography Conference from the North East Regional Ballet Association in 1983. He was also a scholarship student at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. He has received fellowships from the DC Commission on the Arts, the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. He has served on the faculties of City College of NY, The Washington Ballet, American University, Howard University and the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. He presently resides in Atlanta, GA and serves on the faculties of The Governors School of the Arts and Humanities (SC) and the Atlanta Ballet (GA). Mr. Whitmore also freelances throughout the country teaching Master Classes and choreographing for various performing arts schools, colleges, universities and regional dance companies. He is the owner of LEW Design, a Graphic Design Agency.

MONICA RICHARDSON – Choreographer-Hip Hop/Urban Contemporary

A graduate of New World School of Arts in Miami, Monica is trained in modern, ballet, and jazz disciplines. Monica has received dance scholarships to attend Bates Dance Festival and performed lead roles in both Debbie Allen’s “Pepito’s” and LaVerne Reed’s “The Chocolate Nutcracker.” She has worked and performed as a background dancer for Gloria Estefan, and has recently danced in music videos for rap artist Ja Rule and Missy Elliot. Monica has worked with the production company Galaxy and was involved as choreographer and dancer of the show Dremafination, which was performed in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand. Monica continues her dream of performing, choreographing, and teaching master classes throughout the United States.
