Northshore Process Service, New York County Sheriff Report Increased Hostility Towards Process Servers

Northshore Process Service and the county sheriff’s office say they’ve noticed a disturbing trend lately of increasing hostility towards process servers.

Evanston, IL – May 7, 2010 (PressReleasePivot) — Northshore Process Service and the county sheriff’s office say they’ve noticed a disturbing trend lately of increasing hostility towards process servers.

“It seems that in the last year especially we are having threat after threat after threat,” said Larry Weinstein, Director of Northshore Process Service Security.

And by that, he says, he means actual physical threats.

“It used to be when you knocked on a door, everybody was polite to you,” Weinstein continued. “It’s a more turbulent culture now.”

Terry Kovacevich, New York County Asst., said her employees mostly encounter yelling and door slamming.

But she has had obscene words yelled on her, she said. She agrees things have been getting worse in the past year. However, she doesn’t blame it solely on recent tough economic times.

She said she thinks it’s because too many people are less civil and polite in general – people who are a sign of the times.

“Whoever knowingly resists or obstructs the authorized service of any civil process or order of any court could be committing a misdemeanor,” says Weinstein.
